I spoke out last week in Parliament after the SNP proposed measures to delay the reassessment of business rates in Scotland, As businesses across the North East know all too well, the current rates regime is eye-watering and destroying our high streets.
Any delays will come far too late for businesses already struggling with the impact of the pandemic. Despite my efforts to persuade MSPs to get the reassessment completed as a matter of urgency, I was extremely disappointed that Labour abstained and the SNP- including all of their North East parliamentarians- voted to delay.
The Scottish Conservatives believe firmly that rates should fairly reflect trading conditions locally and it is shameful that so many of our region's elected representatives chose to put the interests of their party leaders in the Central Belt over businesses, jobs and their own constituents.
