An award-winning North East community group has been congratulated for its fundraising in the Scottish Parliament.
Since 2016, Stonehaven Men’s Shed has provided a space where men can socialise and learn new skills.
It has received this year’s Age Scotland member group of the year award and this has been marked with a Holyrood motion by North East region MSP Liam Kerr.
Mr Kerr attended the official opening of the Beach Pavilion shed in September last year, following a £105,000 campaign by the group to renovate it.
“Men’s Sheds have done so much for fellowship across Aberdeenshire, and I’ve been following this project since the beginning.
“These spaces combine fun and socialising with tangible community benefits, and they are brilliant for mental and physical health.
“The Beach Pavilion represented a space to expand in Stonehaven, and I’m pleased to see local members team up with the likes of Rotary to make a difference for charities around the world.”
Mr Kerr’s full motion reads:
That the Parliament congratulates Stonehaven and District Men’s Shed on receiving the 2020 Member Group of the Year Award from Age Scotland; recognises that this award reflects the hard work of the shed’s trustees and members who not only raised over £105,000 of funding necessary for the renovation and start-up of the facility but also carried out over 3000 man-hours of additional work to enhance the condition of this valuable community asset; commends the efforts of the Men’s Shed in enhancing the mental and physical health of older people in the local community by encouraging social interaction through shared activities; acknowledges their valuable work together with the Rotary Club of Stonehaven as the focal point in Scotland for the Legs4Africa project where used prosthetic limbs are stripped down to component parts and sent to The Gambia, Senegal and Zambia where they are modified and rebuilt to suit individuals who have lost limbs; and wishes everyone involved in the Men’s Shed continued success in making a positive difference both in Stonehaven and beyond.
